This is a renovation project for one room in "KAMIYAMA"(Tokyo). The building itself is 15 years old, but rather aging. It is steel-frame constructed and the partition wall was build by concrete-block. As we took apart, the blocks were piled up at random and the condition was totally bad. There were holes and soiled spots at the wall, because of the rainwater. This was unexpected situation and it caused some trouble during the construction after the planning.
The project started by the owner's daughter and her husband's request. They live next door to one and wanted to add the room. Their room was getting smaller, so they requested a room, where they can invite guests. One big room using as a living room, but keep their present private space out from the guests. The function will be a toilet and a washstand. The room had existing old windows, which were not able to take away. So we gave consideration not to make the old taste be conspicuous. This idea created the design and it guided us to the concept. Concretely, we left the wall around the windows as a skeleton. And then, we moved the boundaries between Old and New away from the window areas. As a result we produced a u-shaped cube. We aggressively took the progress of the time, Old and New, to the design. We also painted out side of the u-shaped cube, with the pink-putty(mixed red-chalk powder). This made us be conscious to the concept Old and New visual and physical. In addition to that we made a convex surface to the inside. Between the pink wall and the skeleton wall, we made a depression space and placed a toilet into the space. The skeleton wall was in bad condition, as we written at the beginning. So we pleased the painter "SHUHEI NAKAMURA" to try the "painting" to fill the block's hole, but to leave the old taste of the wall. This was a tall order, but he came to an instantaneous decision and started to paint at the scene after he thought through. Finally the wall became not be easily obtained wall.
