This is a renovation project for the head pharmacy "MIZUNO", located in front of the University of Tokyo Hospital. The pharmacy “MIZUNO”, established in 1909, is a first pharmacy that has prepared medicine in Japan. The building itself is 15 years old. Now we are in an information-oriented society and all the pharmacy's surrounding situation has changed in the recent 15 years. Individual privacy is regarded as important and the QOL (Quality of Life) of patients are demanded to medical team. So must the pharmacy guard the patients privacy and hold more value to the patients point of view. Our project is to make a quiet and comfortable minimal-space, where patient and the pharmacist can talk, without nervousness. We had to complete the repair construction in 2 days, at the weekend. Because it has fullest confidence from regular patient and must avoid stopping their work.
The project must grant all clients requests. At first we renewed the 7 counters at the pharmacy. Placing 7 counters side by side, we twisted each of them. Between two counters you will find a depression space. We surrounded this area with the special glass sheet. This glass is visible from only one side. Standing in the depression space, people can talk in a calm frame of mind, and feel like they are in a private room.In explanation of the material, we used titan. The pharmacy owns an antique shelf purchased from France 15 years ago. Considering the balance to the shelf, we chose titan as a surface-material. Different combination, old and new, finds a new expression. We tried to express changing MIZUNO-pharmacy. An old-established store with dignity, but making effort to meet the needs of the times.
