What we focused on in this project was “Gap“ between contemporary free open floor plan and LDK plan; unique Japanese enclosed floor plan which was typical in 18 years ago. Most of the recent architecture are open to the exterior (open air) with a large window opening, and it is getting a matter of course in modern architecture. So, the first thing I recognized in this building was that the size of window openings was very small. I thought that even if we renovate the building, this small window will still evoke its long haritage.
Therefore the first step I got started was design around the window opening and tried to remove the impression of old hardware, and at the same time I was seeking a hint of design concept from window opening. With the prototypical window style, aluminum sash is fixed into a hole in structure body, and most of the time structure wall and glasses are in pairs. However in this project, there is additional design component between wall and glass. This space represent as above-mentioned chronological “Gap.” As a result, we thought that the appearance of this “Gap“ will be like a panda’s black spot around eye with appealing impression, and it will give brilliance to the space. I placed a window shade, which can cover up both “Gap“ and opening. It is able to change a expression by the amount of shade’s opening.
